I Think I'm Alone On This

I don't care what anybody else says; I think Bert's Family Feud is very amusing, thanks to (some of) Bert's one-liners ... and the game is actually entertaining to watch, as well. I'd forgotten how much I loved the format of the show. I might even try to get on it with Wifey, Dad and my brother.

For those of you outside Australia who don't know: Bert Newton is a genius.

... with a very large head.

Bevis, you and I share a love of a number of TV shows, but on this one you're on your own!
Family Feud has been cancelled a couple of times in the past and I can't believe they keep bringing it back!! It's so stupid. Bert Newton is very clever and should have a vehicle that is appropriate for his talents. At the moment though, he's slumming it.
Sorry buddy.

Yes, he should perhaps replace the pregnant chick on Hi-5 when she goes on maternity leave

I can't say that I've actually been home early enough to catch Bert on his new show.

I do think that he is a marvel.

Read this article.

It's not a fantastic photo of him but the content is very interesting.

I applaud his promotion of local theater and his support of up-and-coming performers.

I share your love of Bert, but I'm not convinced he's the right man for that particular job. My household went and saw a live taping the other day and it was kind of painful - Bert is not super comfortable with the game show format and it shows.

Even worse was that the audience 'wrangler' was Pete Smith, who was so sleazy, unfunny and generally abysmal, that it coloured the whole experience in a somewhat negative light. He's like a dirty old uncle who won't stop touching every pretty girl in sight and calling them 'darling.' Bleck.

On the other hand, the families were so stupid that they and their dodgy answers provided much amusement.

Being out of the country means that you miss out on some of the most important moments in local history. I had no idea that Bert was doing Family Feud. I too love Bert. Ahhh, moonface... sock it to 'em.

John B, well - it's as I said in the post's title. I agree with your thoughts on Bert being under-used, though. That was the first thought I had when I heard he was hosting the new version of the show, but I thought I'd give it a go. Maybe he's going to get the Who Wants Tp Be A Millionaire? gig as well (although I reckon Temptation's Ed Phillips would be excellent at that one).

Spankk, very good idea! I like it! :)

Riss, that's the beauty of being unemployed! You can just lie around watching TV all day! (Until the electricity gets cut off because you're not earning any money to pay your bills ...) Great article, BTW. Long, and a few years out-of-date, but very interesting.

Jellyfish, yes - I agree about him not being 100% right for the job, and it's interesting to hear you say you attended a taping. Shame about Pete Smith, though - another once-legend and Channel 9 stalwart. Sad to hear what he'll stoop to, to get a laugh. Bert's discomfort with the show is apparent to all who watch it. He's always needing to read the names of the contestants and families, and his mis-speakings are too numerous to mention. But Wifey and I take great pleasure in answering the questions instantaneously - and far more brilliantly - than the idiotic families seem to be able to muster, even with up to ten minutes' thinking time while their opposition is getting it so drastically wrong as well.

Sheriff of Nothing, I have nothing to say to that. Your own admission is enough. (How dare you!)

Noshie, don't worry - it sounds like my opinion is the minority, so you mustn't be missing much. I must say that I do agree that he's clearly uncomfortable with the show and is struggling with a format that isn't well-suited to him, but I enjoy the show for the game's sake and hope it continues on, even if they find a better match for Bert himself (and I really hope they do).
